Seseorang pernah berkata kepada saya bahwa ketika kita lahir, kedua tangan kita dalam keadaan menggenggam. Seperti menggenggam sesuatu. Katanya, sesuatu yang ada di dalam genggaman itu adalah takdir kehidupan kita. Seperti cita-cita dan cinta. Ketika kita melepaskan genggaman, takdir kehidupan kita pergi. Maka pada saat itulah dunia akan mendengar tangisan kita untuk pertama kalinya. Namun suatu saat, kita akan menemukannya dan kembali pada genggaman tangan kita.

Sebelum saya berbicara lebih lanjut dalam surat motivasi ini, izinkanlah saya mengucapkan terima kasih kepada panitia penerima beasiswa Rusia karena telah memberikan kesempatan bagi saya untuk mencoba menemukan takdir saya di negeri Beruang Merah.

Perkenalkan, gadis keturunan Toraja-Ambon ini memiliki nama lengkap Sixtintia Aprilla Irene Dea. Kerap disapa Lia. Hadir untuk pertama kalinya di dunia pada tanggal 16 April 2000 melalui pasangan suami-istri Fredy Djamal dan Levina Paunno. Menjadi kakak untuk dua orang adik laki-laki yang bernama Jack Immanuel Dea dan Tristan Joshua Dea.

Selama enam tahun mengenyam pendidikan dasar di SD Negeri 1 Passo, tiga tahun pendidikan menengah pertama di SMP Negeri 9 Ambon dan pernah menjabat sebagai ketua OSIS, dan pada akhirnya menjadi seorang alumni dari sebuah sekolah unggulan SMA Negeri Siwalima Ambon. Anak perempuan tunggal ini juga pernah menjadi seorang ketua OSIS ketika berada di bangku putih abu-abu. Serta mengukir beberapa prestasi seperti Juara I Lomba Film Pendek tingkat Provinsi, Juara I Lomba Debat tingkat Kota dan Provinsi serta Juara 2 Pembicara Terbaik Lomba Debat tingkat Provinsi, Kategori 10 Penulis Terbaik Lomba Penulisan Andai Beta Jadi Walikota, dan Peserta Parlemen Remaja Nasional 2015.

Sejak kecil, saya gemar membaca dan menulis karya sastra seperti novel, cerita pendek dan puisi. Saya juga suka menjelajah. Karena bagi saya itu adalah hal yang menyenangkan. Terasa menjadi lebih akrab dengan dunia.

        Pada kesempatan ini, saya akan menjelaskan beberapa alasan yang menjadikan saya layak untuk menerima beasiswa ini.

1. Menjadi seorang dokter bukanlah hal yang mudah. Banyak sekali orang yang bersaing untuk mendapatkan gelar tersebut. Begitu pula dengan saya. Mengapa? Saat saya masih kecil, saya melihat banyak sekali orang yang mendatangi rumah sakit, puskesmas atau poliklinik untuk sekedar periksa, berobat atau rawat inap. Saya mulai berpikir, ternyata banyak orang yang bergantung pada seorang dokter. Saya merasa, “wah, sangat luar biasa, dokter ternyata adalah orang yang sangat penting”. Maka mulai saat itu, saya menetapkan tekad untuk menjadi salah satu orang yang sangat penting itu.

Mengapa untuk menjadi orang penting saya harus menjadi seorang dokter? Karena, menurut saya, seorang dokter sangat dibutuhkan oleh masyarakat. Melihat status quo yang terjadi di Indonesia pada umumnya, masih banyak orang yang belum terjamah oleh hidup sehat. Mereka berada dalam kondisi tubuh baik fisik maupun mental yang cukup memprihatinkan. Bagiamana seseorang dapat menjalani hidupnya apabila ia sakit? Maka, dalam hal inilah dokter hadir untuk menyembuhkan.

2. Anak adalah pewaris keturunan dari suatu keluarga. Bangsa Indonesia memiliki jutaan anak dari Sabang sampai Merauke. Anak-anak inilah yang menjadi generasi emas bangsa. Mereka yang akan membuat Indonesia semakin kokoh dan menjadi negara maju. Namun sayangnya, ibarat sebuah tiang rumah. Banyak anak-anak Indonesia yang masih rapuh sehingga belum mampu untuk menjadi tiang yang kokoh bagi rumah sendiri yakni Indonesia. Sehingga harus didatangkan tiang-tiang dari luar negeri untuk membangun rumah kita-Indonesia. Lalu dimanakah, tiang-tiang Indonesia berdiri? Haruskah anak-anak Indonesia menjadi tiang yang tak terpakai dan terbuang? Saya ingin sekali mengobati dan membantu mengkokohkan “tiang-tiang” anak-anak Negeri agar mereka dapat tumbuh dan berkembang menjadi anak-anak cerdas. Terutama, bagi tiang-tiang muda yang baru lahir.

3. Rusia termasuk dalam daftar negara yang diminati oleh pelajar internasional dan sebagai negara dengan kualitas pengetahuan dan teknologi tinggi. Tidak sedikit ilmuan ternama dunia yang dilahirkan melalui pendidikan di Rusia misalnya Alexander Oparin : Penemu Teori Evolusi Biologi (kehidupan berasal dari laut), Ilya Ilyich Mechnikov : Perintis Sistem Kekebalan Tubuh, dan masih banyak ilmuan lainnya. Hal inilah yang menjadikan saya tidak ragu untuk memilih negara Rusia. Selain itu, saya telah mendengar dan melihat sendiri kesuksesan alumni-alumni SMA Negeri SMA Siwalima yang menimba ilmu di negeri Beruang Merah. Saya pun ingin mencoba hal baru seperti belajar di luar negeri, bergaul dengan teman-teman dari seluruh penjuru dunia, mengenal kebudayaan Rusia serta melangkahkan kaki lebih jauh lagi untuk meraih mimpi.

4. Selanjutnya, mengapa saya memilih Nizhny Novgorod Medical State Academy? Berdasarkan informasi yang saya peroleh dari laman website masmanroe.blogspot.co.id, dikatakan oleh si penulis blog bahwa Nizhny Novgorod Medical State Academy adalah salah satu pusat terkemuka untuk melatih prakitisi medis di Rusia. Akademi ini mendapat peringkat ke-7 dari kurang lebih 46 perguruan tinggi medis di Rusia dan sangat di akui oleh Organisasi Kesehatan Dunia (WHO). Hampir seluruh pemerintah di dunia mengirimkan putra-putri mereka untuk menimba ilmu disana agar menjadi seorang ahli medis. Berdasarkan pernyataan inilah yang membuat saya berminat untuk melanjutkan pendidikan di universitas yang terletak di Nizhny Novgorod ini. Saya ingin belajar di universitas terbaik kemudian lulus dan menjadi seorang dokter yang hebat untuk menjadikan anak-anak Indonesia lebih hebat lagi

5. Rasa takut dan khawatir tentu saya rasakan jika nanti berkuliah di Rusia. Namun percayalah, rasa takut dan khawatir yang saya miliki tidak mampu mengalahkan impian dan tekad saya untuk belajar di negara yang terletak di Eropa Timur tersebut. Selama hampir tiga tahun saya tinggal di asrama, terpisah dari keluarga dan belajar hidup mandiri. Menetap di dalam satu asrama bersama teman-teman dengan beragam latar belakang kehidupan, agama, suku, budaya, bahasa dan karakter membuat saya mampu menyesuaikan diri dengan baik. Pengalaman sebagai ketua OSIS pun telah melatih jiwa sosial serta mental yang saya miliki. Sehingga saya percaya bahwa saya adalah pribadi yang berkompeten. Selain itu, sebagai anak dari kedua orang tua yang memiliki pekerjaan sebagai anggota POLRI pun menjadikan saya sebagai pribadi yang disiplin, bertanggung jawab dan berani.

6. Seperti yang telah saya sampaikan pada poin ketiga, saya ingin membangun Indonesia dengan cara mengabdi sebagai seorang dokter. Namun, mimpi saya tidak hanya sebatas pada Indonesia saja. Saya ingin menjadi seorang dokter yang menjelejahi dunia hingga ke daerah terpencil untuk membantu orang-orang yang kesakitan seperti kekurangan gizi, malaria, HIV/AIDS, terkhususnya bagi anak-anak kecil. Saya menjadi terinspirasi untuk melakukan hal tersebut setelah membaca sebuah buku yang mengkisahkan tentang seorang dokter yang berkeliling dunia untuk menyembuhkan anak-anak yang kekurangan gizi di Afrika Selatan.

Demikianlah surat motivasi ini saya buat untuk dijadikan sebagai pertimbangan. Atas perhatiannya saya ucapkan terima kasih.

Someone once told me that when we are born, we are in a state of both hands grasping. Like grasping something. She said, something that is in the grip of it is the destiny of our lives. As ideals and love. When we let go of the grip, the destiny of our lives away. So at that time the world will hear our cries for the first time. But someday, we will find it and get back on our hands.

Before I speak further in this motivational letter, allow me to thank the committee for scholarships Russia 2017/2018 has give opportunity for me to try to find my destiny in the land of the Red Bear.

Let me introduce myself. The girl’s descent Toraja-Ambon has full name Sixtintia Aprilla Irene Dea. Often called Lia.Present for the first time in the world on 16 April 2000 through the couples Fredy Djamal and Levina Paunno. Being sister to two younger brothers named Jack Immanuel Dea and Tristan Joshua Dea.

During the six years of basic education in 1 Elementry School, the three years of secondary education in 9 Junior High School and served as a chairman of the student council, and eventually became an alumna of an excellent school Siwalima Senior High School. This single daughter also had been a chairman of the student council when it is in white and gray bench. As well carve out some achievements such as the Winner in the Short Film Competition in Provincial level 2015,  as the Participant in the Short Film Competition in National level 2015, the Winner in  the National School Debating Championship (Indonesian Language) in City and Provincial levels 2016, as the Best II Speaker in the National School Debating Championship (Indonesian Language) in Provincial Level 2016, as the Participant in the National School Debating Championship (Indonesian Language) in the National level 2016, Category Top 10 Writers in the Writing Contest “If Beta Be a Ambon’s Mayor”, and the participants of the National Youth Parliament 2015, etc.

Since a child, I love reading and writing literary, such as novels, short stories and poetry. I also like to explore. Because for me it is fun. Feels become more familiar with the world.

On this occasion, I will explain some of the reasons that make me worthy to receive this scholarship.

1. Being a doctor is not easy. A lot of people are competing for the title. So it is with me. Why? When I was little, I saw a lot of people who come to the hospital, health center or clinic for a check, treatment or hospitalization. I began to think, there are many people who rely on a doctor. I feel, “well, amazing, the doctor turns out to be a very important person”. So from that moment, I set a determination to be one of those very important person.

Why to become an important person I should be a doctor? Because, I think, a doctor is needed by society. See the status quo that occurred in Indonesia in general, many people still unspoiled by healthy living. They are in bad condition physically and mentally . The circumstances of a person can live his life when he was sick? So, in this case a doctor was present to heal.

2. Children are a descendant of a family heir. Indonesian nation has millions of children from Sabang to Merauke. Children that is the golden generation of the nation. They will make Indonesia more sturdy and a developed country. But unfortunately, like a pole house. Many Indonesian children are still fragile, so have not been able to become a solid pole for the house itself, namely Indonesia. So that the poles had to be brought from abroad to build our own home-Indonesia? Then in where Indonesian poles must stand? Should Indonesian children became a pole of unused and wasted? I wanted to treat and help the “poles” foreign children so they can grow and develop into intelligent children. Especially, the poles of newborn young.

3. Russia was included in the list of countries of interest by international students and as a country with high-quality knowledge and technology. Not a bit of world-renowned scientists who are born through education in Russia for example Alexander Oparin: The inventor of the Theory of Evolution Biology (life comes from the sea), Ilya Ilyich Mechnikov: Pioneers Immune System, and many other scientists. This is what makes me do not hesitate to choose the Russian state. In addition, I have heard and seen   success of alumni of Siwalima Senior High School which studying at Red Bear country. I also want to try new things such as study abroad, hanging out with friends from around the world, know the culture of Russia and stepped farther to achieve a dream.

4. Furthermore, why I chose Nizhny Novgorod State Medical Academy? Based on the information I got from the website pages masmanroe.blogspot.co.id, said by the author of the blog that the Nizhny Novgorod State Medical Academy is one of the leading centers for training medical in Russia. This Academy was ranked 7th of approximately 46 medical colleges in Russia and highly recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO). Almost all governments in the world sent their children to study there in order to be a medical expert. Based on this statement that made me wish to continue their education at university located in Nizhny Novgorod. I want to study in the best universities and then graduated and became a great doctor to make children more violent Indonesia

5. Fear and worry would I feel if later studying in Russia. But believe me, the fear and worry that I have not able to defeat the dreams and determination to learn in the country located in the Eastern Europe. For nearly three years I lived in a dorm, separated from family and learn to live independently. Settled in a dorm with friends of various backgrounds of life, religion, ethnicity, culture, language and character made me able to adjust well. Experience as chairman of the council had been trained social and mental life that I have. So I believe that I was personally competent. Moreover, as the daughter of parents who had a job as police members also make me disciplined, responsible and brave.

6. As I mentioned in the third point, I want to build Indonesia by serving as a doctor. However, my dream is not just limited to Indonesia alone. I want to be a doctor who explore theworld to the remote area to help people who are in pain such as malnutrition, malaria, HIV / AIDS, especially for children. I became inspired to do this after reading a book that delves into about a doctor who travels the world to treat children suffering from malnutrition in South Africa.

So I created this motivation letter to be used as consideration. Thank you for your attention.

Motivation Letter

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am interested to apply for the MSc in Electrical Engineering with specialisation in Robotics and Mechatronics at the University of Twente as I believe that this particular programme is the best step for preparing my long-term journey to be a robotics professor.

Robotics has attracted me since the first day of my undergraduate degree at the Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), Indonesia. During freshman orientation on September 2009, I was extremely excited to watch the demonstration of hexapods robot that intelligently navigates through a labyrinth to seek and extinguish fire placed into a random location. That first impression has directly affected my personal interest in choosing future career. Since then, I want to work as a robotics researcher in academic environment. In order to achieve that goal, during my undergraduate study, I strived to upgrade my theoretical comprehension and research skills through academics and research activities.

I had a precious opportunity to hone my practical skills while working as a research member of Gadjah Mada Robotic Team (GMRT). In humanoid soccer robot division, I designed robot’s visual navigation system including ball-tracking and goalpost detection which was adopted from several pertinent theories of Image Processing Engineering, Robotics, and other relevant subjects in my undergraduate study. Apart from the research works, becoming an active member of GMRT also provides me with experiences to take part on several robotics contests either in national or international level. It was an excellent chance to exchange knowledge and ideas with many robotics practitioners while performing our robots under competitive atmosphere.

I further develop my interest to pursue higher degree following my participation in International Conference on Computer, Control, Informatics, and Its Application (IC3INA) held by Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI). In that occasion, I presented the result of my team’s project on automated sorting and grading machine for fruits. I found that, taking a part in research dissemination and updates through scientific conferences are a significant process for establishing my research characters. I became encouraged to improve my research skills by organising further advanced scientific works on robotics, machine vision, and automation.

Paragraf 3 dan 4: Saya gunakan untuk menjelaskan “How“, bagaimana pengalaman-pengalaman yang relevan dengan bidang studi yang akan saya tempuh tersebut melatarbelakangi dan memperkuat visi saya ke depan. Jadi selain menunjukkan prestasi, coba jelaskan juga bagaimana prestasi tersebut bermanfaat dalam pengembangan diri dan membentuk diri kita, dan seterusnya (*kalimat-kalimat yang sudah saya tandai dengan underline).

One of the recent topics in robotics that attracts me is Simultaneous Localisation and Mapping (SLAM). My motivation to choose that particular topic is synthesised from my past experiences working on GMRT and several mobile robot projects, my recent work on smart electric vehicle development at MOLINA project, and my future ambition to develop an intelligent rover robot which is especially employed in agricultural cultivation or mining exploration as potential sector for Indonesian development in the forthcoming era. Previously, I had started to investigate this topic during my undergraduate thesis. On my final project, I simulated a basic monocular SLAM to estimate the relative position of a moving camera to a group of visual landmarks, which is an important initiation for visual odometry of mobile robot. Since I aim to develop more robust algorithm for real-time applications, I require a deeper advanced knowledge and research support for realising my future projects.

Paragraf 5: Menjelaskan tentang “What and How“, topik apa yang ingin saya dalami saat studi ke depan, bagaimana kaitannya dengan topik yang sudah saya kerjakan pada jenjang pendidikan sebelumnya, dan juga bagaimana cara menyelesaikan permasalahan yang menjadi concernkita.
Bagian ini menurut saya sangat krusial. Tunjukkan bahwa kita benar-benar memahami antara lain:
(1) Persoalan atau penelitian apa yang ingin kita selesaikan
(2) Mengapa kita perlu menyelesaikan penelitian tersebut
(3) Bagaimana cara menyelesaikan penelitian tersebut dari sudut pandang teknis bidang keilmuan kita

The main reason that encourages me to apply for MSc programme in Electrical Engineering with specialisation in Robotics and Mechatronics at the University of Twente is that a wide opportunity given by this programme to acquire strong research experiences. I am sure that there is no better preparation for a future researcher than by actually doing research. University of Twente with its Robotics and Mechatronics (RAM) as a vibrant robotics research group in the Europe, supported by its renowned and qualified teaching and research staffs, will be a suitable medium for succeeding my MSc project. Through this research group, I am particularly interested to work under several Professors to contribute in a project exploring the topic of robot navigation in a complex and dynamic environment for special purpose, i.e. under Prof. XXX with his project of XXX project for agricultural robot development or Dr. YYY with her project of YYY for rescue robot development. From that research, I am strongly motivated to publish my findings in a leading Robotics and Automation conference or journal.

In addition to that, the curriculum given by the University of Twente in EE MSc programme will be a perfect catalyst for upgrading my theoretical comprehension in robotics field for succeeding my future dreams. Thus, I am utterly interested to learn the offered courses, especially the standard specialisation courses on Modern Robotics and Image Processing and Computer Vision, and elective courses on Advanced Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition and Measurement Systems for Mechatronics, which are pertinent to my proposed project.

Paragraf 6 dan 7: Tujuan dari paragraf ini adalah untuk menjelaskan lebih dalam poin-poin yang telah saya jelaskan pada paragraf 5.
Usahakan untuk menjelaskan:
(1) Kenapa studi dan penelitian yang ingin kita kerjakan cocok untuk dikerjakan di universitas tersebut dan program studi tersebut.
(2) Apa-apa saja informasi yang telah kita gali untuk mengenal penelitian-penelitian yang ada di kampus tersebut, yang kemudian kira-kira sesuai dengan bidang keilmuan dan ketertarikan kita.
Usahakan juga untuk menunjukkan kepada reviewer bahwa kita:
(1) Tahu dan paham tentang kurikulum yang ada di program studi kampus tersebut
(2) Tahu beberapa dosen dan proyek penelitian yang sedang mereka kerjakan yang sesuai dengan bidang keilmuan kita
(3) Mampu mengaitkan informasi-informasi tersebut untuk menarik benang merah yang sesuai dengan tujuan dan latar belakang studi kita

After my master’s, I am keen on continuing my study to doctoral degree and I consider pursuing robotics MSc in your institution as an important step to build my credentials as a researcher. Studying in Enschede as an international student destination, with its vast opportunities and extensive links to industrial companies and research institutions, I wish to expand my insight and networks for my future career. By then, the experience, skill, attitude, and knowledge that I obtain during my proposed study at University of Twente will benefit me greatly in achieving my future success in order to deliver significant contribution for Robotics and Automation innovation and usefulness for human being.
